2005 King Kong

Alternative titles: /

Year: 2005

Runtime: 187 min

Genre: adventure, action, sci-fi, fantasy, drama, romance

Director: Peter Jackson

Country: United States, New Zealand, Germany

PLOT:  In 1933 New York, an overly ambitious movie producer coerces his cast and hired ship crew to travel to mysterious Skull Island, where they encounter Kong, a giant ape who is immediately smitten with leading lady Ann Darrow.

About the film:
Peter Jackson was a nine year old in the New Zealand town of Pukerua Bay when he first saw the 1933 version of King Kong. He was in tears in front of the TV when Kong slipped off the Empire State Building. At age 12 he tried to recreate the film using his parents’ super-8 camera and a model of Kong made of wire and rubber with his mother’s fur coat for the hair, but eventually gave up on the project. In 1996, he developed a version that was in pre-production for 6–7 months, but the studio cancelled it. This is most likely because of the release of Mighty Joe Young and Godzilla the same year. During this time Jackson had achieved the designs of the Brontosaurus and the Venatosaurus. No casting was ever done, but he had hoped to get either George Clooney or Robert De Niro for the roles of Jack Driscoll and Carl Denham, respectively.
He then began work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy. With the overwhelming box office and critical success of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Universal contacted him during production of the second film, and he was paid $20 million USD to direct this film, the highest salary Hollywood ever paid a director.

2005 A Sound Of Thunder

Alternative titles: /

Year: 2005

Runtime: 110 min

Genre: adventure, action, sci-fi

Director: Peter Hyams

Country: United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Czech Republic

PLOT: 2055, Charles Hatton has made a fortune by founding ‘Time safari’, which offers rich ‘big game hunters’ short time travels to kill off dinosaurs just before their natural death. When Travis notices the weather and wildlife are not behaving as usual, he consults Dr. Rand, the contractually invisible inventor of the supercomputer which controls the time travel. They soon face ‘time waves’, each worsening the effects in 2055 of evolutionary distortions, lower lifeforms first. They attempt to identify and rectify the past alteration, but each attempt gets harder in their distorted present.

About the film:
When Hatton (Ben Kingsley) receives his clients after their time safari, he likes to compare them with great explorers: Marco Polo, Columbus, Armstrong… and he also says “like Brubaker on Mars”, remembering a future (past for him) conquest of the Red Planet. Brubaker was the name of the commander of the Mars expedition in the film Capricorn One (1977), also directed by Peter Hyams.

2004 Raptor Island

Alternative titles: /

Year: 2004

Runtime: 89 min

Genre: adventure, action, sci-fi, horror

Director: Stanley Isaacs

Country: United States

PLOT: A team of SEALs chases a group of terrorists onto the island after destroying a weapons cache and rescuing a special agent held hostage. While tracking the terrorists, mutated dinosaurs appear and the mission changes into simple survival. After losing several men to vicious raptors and killing some of the terrorists, the Seals manage to rescue the special agent captured by Azir, the terrorists’ leader. The agent, Jamie, and the remaining Seals discover a crash site of a Chinese aircraft. Around the site are broken containers that originally contained nuclear waste, raising the question of why the Chinese government had American nuclear waste. It is deduced that this caused the local animals to mutate to near-perfect dinosaurs. The dinosaurs kill all the terrorists except Azir, who murders a SEAL, stealing his armour and machine gun. After encountering more mutant raptors, the last three SEALs and Jamie find refuge in a cave, which turns out to be the nest of the dinosaurs. In the end, Azir is eaten by a mutated Carnotaurus and the entire island blows up as a result of volcanic activity. The last scene is of three raptors escaping the carnage, swimming after the rescue helicopter.

About the film:
Raptor Island is followed by the loosely related 2007 sequel Planet Raptor.

2002 Dinotopia

Alternative titles: /

Year: 2002

Runtime: 250 min

Genre: adventure, family, fantasy

Director: Marco Brambilla

Country: United Kingdom, United States, Germany

PLOT: Carl and David, two boys flying a small aircraft over the ocean with their father, crash land near an uncharted island. The boys swim safely to shore, but their father unfortunately drowns in the crash. On their own, the brothers explore the island and soon discover it is not only inhabited by people, but by dinosaurs as well! While the place seems easy enough to get used to, the boys must find a way of returning to their home…

About the film:
The word “Dinotopia” is a portmanteau of “Dinosaur”, which means “terrible lizard” in Greek, and “Utopia”, which means “good place”. Ironically, it literally means “terrible place”.

Dinotopia is a four hour (three episode) TV miniseries co-produced by Walt Disney Television and Hallmark Entertainment. It is based on the fictional world of Dinotopia, a utopia in which sentient dinosaurs and humans coexist, created by American author James Gurney. The miniseries uses plot details from Gurney’s first two Dinotopia books, “Dinotopia” and “Dinotopia: The World Beneath”, although it takes place in a time farther into the future.

Plans for a Dinotopia film were previously rejected due to the expense of creating a world populated by both humans and dinosaurs. Both Columbia Pictures and Disney at one time made the attempt, but both studios abandoned the idea, Disney opting to make their own homegrown film, Dinosaur in 2000. Hallmark Entertainment chief Robert Halmi Sr. then purchased the rights after having seen GurneyÂ’s book.

There is one bit of paleontological inaccuracy. The scene where Marion’s half-sister gives Karl a tour of the hatchery, she describes the still-unhatched “26” as a “Chasmosaurus. A member of the hadrosaur family.”, however That is inaccurate; chasmosaurs are ceratopsians (including dinosaurs such as Triceratops and styracosaurus). Hadrosaurids are “duck-billed” dinosaurs. (the family including Parasaurolophus, Corythosaurus and Lambeosaurus)
